Summer...its languid days and sunny afternoons are a blessing and a curse. Mostly a blessing, as I've shared hours of relaxed play with Luke and Mimi, plus an amazing family adventure in Europe (more on this to come). So good to be rid of the school year structure, with its looming bedtimes and lunches that need to be packed. The lovliness of planning a trip to the beach on a Tuesday.
The curse: no writing. The heat tends to loosen everything, including my discipline and attention span. Mornings stretch into afternoons, which last forever here in the Pacific Northwest. It's still light at 9pm, so why should the kids go to bed? They can sleep in in the morning! By the time the house is quiet and the dishes are done, I'm ready for bed myself.
I tend to chastise myself for my lack of productivity, and then I remember that I only have a few summers while my babies are young. They won't always want to build Legos with me, or hike to see the waterfalls, or lie around in pajamas watching movies. They're mine right now, and I'm making the most of it.
The writing can wait.
